Big Sandy Health Care operates four, full-service dental clinics including a mobile dental unit.
BSHC’s dental staff includes five dentists, six dental hygienists, and two expanded-duty dental assistants who provide a wide range of preventive and restorative oral health services. BSHC also operates a mobile dental unit with two outreach teams that provide a full range of oral health services in local schools. Our services to youth through the mobile dental until provide critical oral health care, such as exams, cavity treatment, and sealants.
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children and interferes with learning and quality of life. The rate of tooth decay among 3rd and 6th graders in eastern Kentucky was much higher than the rest of the state, with more than half – roughly 15,100 children – having untreated cavities. More than half of 3rd and 6th graders did not have dental sealants on a permanent molar. The study also showed that one in five 3rd and 6th graders in eastern Kentucky – around 5,400 children – need urgent dental care.
