Honoring Extraordinary Nurses at Big Sandy Health Care
What Is the DAISY Award?
DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).
His family created the DAISY Award to recognize the skilled and compassionate care he received from his nurses and celebrate the professionals who consistently meet the high standard of care he received. The DAISY Award was created to keep his special spirit alive and recognize the special contributions nurses provide.
Each DAISY Award Honoree will be recognized at a public ceremony at their clinic, and will receive an award certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful Healer’s Touch hand-carved stone sculpture.

Criteria for DAISY Award Nominees
Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians, and employees are encouraged to nominate an exceptional Big Sandy Health Care nurse for the DAISY Award. This award honors nurses who go above and beyond in providing compassionate, skilled, and patient-centered care.
A DAISY nurse consistently demonstrates:
- Compassionate Care – Builds meaningful and empathetic connections with patients and their families, showing kindness and respect
- Clinical Excellence – Provides high-quality care with expertise, safety, and skill
- Professionalism – Exemplifies integrity, accountability, and leadership in their daily practice
- Patient Advocacy – Actively involves patients and families in care planning, ensuring their voices are heard and respected
- Teamwork – Collaborates effectively with the healthcare team to meet patient and family needs and fosters a supportive environment
- Education & Support – Clearly communicates and educates patients and their loved ones, helping them feel informed and comfortable.
